The Up and Coming Class - New Candidates Met at the Democratic Convention

House Democrats:

John Adler (New Jersey - 3rd district) - Mr. Adler is currently ahead of his GOP counterpart in his race. In the state of New Jersey he has been integral in smoking cessation programs and believes that prevention plays a vital role in health care reform. Mr. Adler is part of the Red to Blue program and occupational therapy's good friend Representative Debbie Wasserman-Schultz is his mentor in his candidacy.

Steve Young (California - 48th district) - Mr. Young finds his passion with veterans. His mother was the head nurse at the local VA for many years. When his father, a veteran, suffered a stroke they were unable to get care for him at the local VA. He took this experience and made it into his platform to run for Congress and is focused on improving access and services to our veterans.

On Wednesday morning at a meet the candidates gathering we had the opportunity to meet several candidates. Tom Udall of New Mexico, Jeff Merkley of Oregon (currently speaker of the statehouse), and Mark Udall of Colorado. Yes there are two Udalls in this group and interestingly enough they are cousins!

Stay tuned this post will be updated throughout the convention!

Thanks Amy for keeping us informed about the convention. The excitement is almost palpable. I heard recently on NPR that our current healthcare system is costing taxpayers because of the burden of the uninsured. The speaker was saying essentially that more businesses would thrive if there was some form of universal healthcare or at least affordable healthcare for all. So I am glad that the politicians are talking about healthcare .... the problem is how to reform it?

Susan, you are exactly right the question is how to reform it. Incremental may not give the people the reform they want to see as quickly as they like. Complete reform all at once may provide alot of chaos with the system. I too am glad to see that this is a key issue of discussion in the election and hope it remains a top priority for the new administration and Congress after the after in the upcoming year and beyond.
