- Caroline Kennedy led a tribute to her uncle Senator Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts much of which revolved around his consistent support of health care. The occupational therapy profession witnessed this support with his recent and brief return to the floor specifically to support the Medicare bill and to turn the vote to our favor and extend the exceptions process for 18 months. The hall was completely unified in support of Senator Kennedy waving Kennedy signs--it was an amazing site.
- Senator Tom Harkin of Iowa came to the stage and signed to the crowd to say he was excited to see such a tremendous showing of people with disabilities here advocating for health care reform. Senator Harkin had a brother who used sign language as his primary form of communication.
- Finally Michelle Obama joined the convention and shared a bit about her story, her husband, and their family. Mrs. Obama was joined at the end on stage by their children and Senator Obama via satellite from Kansas City.
After the convention we attended several networking events including the Party with your Party celebration hosted by Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairman Howard Dean, "Two Parties One Ticket" Bipartisian Party, and Speaker Pelosi's Celebration of Democracy.
Denver is a great host city so far! Tomorrow we look forward to attending a health policy briefing on the challenges the baby boomers bring for the next administration, a book signing, several health care group receptions, the women's caucus, and a reception for Representative Dutch Ruppersberger of California. This is just a glimpse of what is to come tomorrow so stay tuned for more updates on the strides AOTA is making for you during the political conventions, and feel free to post your comments and begin a dialogue.
