History in the Making

Regardless of political affiliation what a historic couple of days this is for our country. Senator Barack Obama accepted the Democratic nomination for President and Sarah Palin (Governor of Alaska, mother of 5 including one child in the military and her youngest a special needs child) joining the Republican ticket as the VP nominee with McCain. The presidential tickets of both the Democrat and Republican parties alike are showing the changes in America's demographics and the progress we have made as a country. While AOTPAC focuses on Congressional candidates and does not support presidential campaigns or endorse presidential candidates, I felt it was worth noting the historic moments we have all been witnessing in the past 48 hours.

Hello, I am an OT student representing West Virginia University, currently in my Graduate year of OT school anticipating my final embarkement as I prepare to enter my last clinical rotation in a few short months. Irregardless of policital preference as far as nominations go, I feel that Sarah Palin, candidate for Vice President of the GOP will help in opening many doors and windows to Occupational Therapy practice, in general, as she will be able to relate to and relay important issues regarding disabled persons, childrens, peoples of all populations due to the fact that she has personal experience with living with someone with a disability. Her youngest son, diagnosed with Down's Syndrome will be a health care symbol in the American spotlight as he raises issues and awareness to the special needs populations in America. It will be interesting to see what effects she may have on healthcare in America as she has been directly affected to the ups and downs of American healthcare and parity over the past years.
